Retaining Wall Design

Description

An existing building was being renovated into an assisted living facility with a requirement that guests and patients be able to access the second floor without the use of stairs or an elevator. Retaining walls were needed to construct the new driveway and parking area at the second floor level. Because there was no room for guardrails, SFC Engineering Partnership Inc., (SFC), designed a large block wall that would act as the retaining wall and provide a traffic barrier for vehicles on the driveway and upper parking area.

One of the challenges on this project was the intersections of the various curves using large blocks in a battered retaining wall. With great attention to detail, SFC was able to accommodate the design intent off the site plan which originally showed poured in place concrete walls.
